Short answer: if you turned the label on yourself, edit the post and switch it off. If Instagram added it, there's no switch: delete the post, remove the AI data from the file, and upload the clean copy.

First, find out who added the label

Instagram's "AI info" label (called "Made with AI" until July 2024) gets onto a post in one of two ways:

  • You added it. When posting, you turned on Instagram's AI label switch.
  • Instagram added it. Meta reads AI data stored inside the file you uploaded, such as C2PA Content Credentials written by ChatGPT, Gemini, Adobe Firefly or Photoshop's AI features, or an IPTC field saying the image was made by AI. If it finds that data, it labels the post automatically.

If you don't remember turning the label on, Instagram almost certainly added it from the file.

How to remove AI info you added yourself

  1. Open the post and tap the three dots (⋯).
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Find the AI label setting and switch it off. Depending on your app version it may sit under the caption or behind an "AI info" link.
  4. Tap Done.

Instagram renames these menus from time to time. If you can't find the switch, the label probably came from the file, not from you.

How to remove AI info Instagram added automatically

There is no setting that removes an automatic label, because it comes from the file itself. The fix is to post a clean copy:

  1. Download or find your original image (not a screenshot of the post).
  2. Remove the AI data. Open AI Metadata Cleaner, drop the image in and download the cleaned copy. It removes Content Credentials, IPTC and XMP data in your browser, without uploading your photo. For a reel or video, use the video metadata remover.
  3. Check the report. The cleaner re-reads the new file and shows whether anything is left.
  4. Delete the labelled post, or archive it if you'd rather keep it privately.
  5. Upload the clean copy with the same caption.

Deleting a post loses its likes and comments, so decide whether the label bothers you more than that.

Can you ask Instagram to remove the label?

You can report it. On the post, shake your phone (or go to Settings → Help → Report a problem) and describe the wrong label. Instagram doesn't promise a reply, so treat this as a long shot and use the clean re-upload if you need the label gone.

How to stop it happening next time

  • Clean files before you post. Run every AI-touched image through a metadata cleaner first, then upload that copy directly.
  • Know which edits add AI data. In Photoshop and Lightroom, features like Generative Fill, Generative Expand and Generative Remove attach Content Credentials. The older non-AI tools (Spot Healing Brush, Clone Stamp, Content-Aware Fill) don't.
  • Label honestly when it matters. If the image is a realistic AI picture of a real person or event, Meta expects you to disclose it. Removing metadata doesn't change that.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove AI info from an Instagram post after posting?

If you added the label, edit the post and turn the AI label off. If Instagram added it, delete the post and upload a copy with the AI metadata removed. There's no switch for automatic labels.

Why can't I turn off AI info on my Instagram post?

Because Instagram added it automatically from data inside your file. The switch only removes a label you added yourself.

Does editing the caption remove the AI info label?

No. The label comes from the image file, not the caption.

Will Instagram label the clean copy?

Instagram labels from the AI data it finds in the file. In our own test of 9 posts, no cleaned copy was labelled, while every original that still had AI data was. With that data removed there's nothing for it to read, though Meta has said it's working on other ways to detect AI content, so no tool can promise how every future upload will be treated.

Does the same work on Facebook?

Yes. Facebook uses the same Meta labelling. When we tested it, Facebook labelled AI originals "AI content" instantly and left the cleaned copies unlabelled. See which platforms label AI images for the full results.
